Michael Lerner in London:
'The
Globalisation of Spirit versus the Globalisation of
Capital - a new strategy for radical social
transformation'.
7pm,
October 29th, Friends
House,
Euston Road, London NW1 (opposite Euston BR/Underground;
with disabled access).
Acclaimed US spiritual pioneer and co-founder of the
growing 'Politics of Meaning' movement Rabbi Michael
Lerner will be visiting the UK in October to give a
first ever public lecture about his unique vision,
titled 'The Globalisation of Spirit versus the
Globalisation of Capital - a new strategy for radical
social transformation'.
The Politics of Meaning is a new theoretical
orientation and strategy to transform society and
culture.
Beyond the prevailing ethos of selfishness, it
presents a positive achievable vision of how the world
would look based on a community of spirit, on grassroots
renewal and ecological, ethical and holistic values.
The Politics of Meaning presents a new framework for
thinking about childhood, loving relationships, the
world of work, politics, law, education and ecology.
Rabbi Lerner has been described by some as America's
pre-eminent Jewish intellectual, and was chosen by the
respected progressive journal Utne Reader as one of
America's 100 most visionary thinkers. He is the author
of Spirit Matters - Global Healing
and the Wisdom of the Soul and edits Tikkun magazine (www.tikkun.org).
Politics of Meaning supporters include: David Korten
(author of The Post-Corporate World), Riane Eisler
(author of The Chalice and the Blade), Naomi Klein
(author of No Logo), Ken Wilber (author of
Sex, Ecology, Spirituality), Matthew Fox (Creation Spirituality),
Amnesty International, Kevin Danaher (Seattle
non-violent protest organiser), Wei Jinsheng
(Nobel peace prize nominee and Chinese dissident), Prof
Cornel West, Rev Jim Wallis, Andrew Weil
(Natural
Health, Natural Medicine) and Thomas Moore (Care of
the Soul).
Bill and Hillary Clinton also became publicly
interested in the Politics of Meaning's vision for
changing society, but quickly capitulated when faced
with the hostile glare of the cynical mainstream media -
which had a field day attacking ethical and spiritual
issues it was unable to take seriously.
This unmissable event for people interested in
transformative politics will be co-hosted by Matthew
Taylor, director of the leading centre-left think-tank
the Institute for Public Policy Research, and former
head of Tony Blair's policy unit. An activist organiser
since the sixties, Lerner has understood first-hand why
the usual political approaches have failed to succeed in
delivering long-lasting transformation.
'In the course of the next fifty years, more and more
environmentalists will come to understand that spirit
matters. They will make the spiritual transformation of
consciousness the linchpin of their strategy to save the
environment,' says Michael. 'Only when environmentalists
can understand the logic
of spiritual needs, needs that are just as real but that
do not manifest in market terms, can they effectively
respond to the powerful 'free trade' and 'let everyone
choose whatever they want' arguments of the corporate
globalists.'
'It is only when our hunger for love and caring and our
need to respond to the world with with awe and wonder
can be linked through Spirit that environmentalism will
achieve the social and political power to save the
planet.
It's only through the fight for new definitions of
productivity, efficiency and rationality that we will
develop a majority ready to put environmental
consciousness above the expansion of material
production'.
Lerner also confronts the often subtly excluding
holier-than-thou message of many groups campaigning for
radical change: 'Let's also acknowledge that there are
millions of decent individuals involved in corporate
life who would be thrilled to be part of a
society that served higher goals than corporate profit.'
